DESCRIPTION
GENERAL INFORMATION The College of Pharmacy operates its program from a twobuilding complex on the University of Texas at Austin campus. The college also has a joint program with the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio and cooperative programs with the University of Texas at El Paso and the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg. The cooperative programs are designed to attract exceptional seniors in high school into the study of pharmacy. The College has expanded and intensified the patient-care and extramural professional training components of the curriculum, taking advantage of the health-care facilities, educational resources and collaborative programs available under cooperative agreements with other components of The University of Texas System. Pharmacy interns expand their professional practice knowledge and skills in preparation for stimulating and satisfying careers in the profession of pharmacy alongside medical, dental and nursing students at clinical education sites in the Austin/Temple/Waco area, El Paso, and the Rio Grande Valley and at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
No student may begin the professional curriculum until he or she has been admitted to The University of Texas at Austin and has been admitted to the professional curriculum in pharmacy by the dean, following recommendation by the Admissions Committee of the College of Pharmacy. Admission to the University in no way implies or guarantees admission to the professional curriculum. If the number of eligible applicants for the professional curriculum exceeds the number of positions that available facilities can accommodate, final selection is made by the admissions committee of the College of Pharmacy and approved by the dean. Students seeking to transfer to the University should note that the two application processes, both to the University of Texas at Austin and to the College of Pharmacy, are separate and independent. To be accepted, the applicant should complete at least 60 semester hours, which must include general biology (cellular, molecular, and structure and functions of organisms), 6 hours; genetics, 3hours; general chemistry (w/lab), 8 hours; English rhetoric and composition (freshman), 3 hours; mathematics (through differential and integral calculus), 3 hours; statistics, 3 hours; sophomore literature (English, American, or world), 3 hours; organic chemistry w/lab, 8 hours; physics w/lab, 4 hours; and microbiology w/lab, 4 hours. The remaining hours can be selected from the following courses, all of which must be completed before a Pharm.D. degree can be conferred. Legislative requirements for all students: American history, 6 hours; and American government (including Texas), 6 hours. The University's basic education requirements include: fine arts and humanities, 3 hours; and social and behavior science electives, 3 hours. In accordance with the University's requirements, a student in the College of Pharmacy must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language equivalent to the completion of two semesters of college coursework. If a student has completed two years of a single foreign language in high school, no additional foreign language is necessary. The foreign language requirement must be fulfilled before a student seeks admission to the professional sequence of courses. The Admissions Committee conducts a holistic review of application materials. This consists of an assessment of overall academic achievement as indicated by grade point average and PCAT scores. Emphasis is on grades earned in required prepharmacy courses. Work done at the University and word done elsewhere are evaluated separately. In addition to academic credentials, the Admissions Committee also considers other factors such as, but not limited to, letters of recommendation, oral and written communication skills, extracurricular involvement, knowledge of the profession, and many special life circumstances.
