DESCRIPTION
The University of Iowa is located one mile from Interstate 80 (Exit 244) in Iowa City.
- The College building is located with the other health science colleges on the west side of the campus. The health sciences complex comprises the teaching and research facilities of the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry and Pharmacy plus the patient care facilities of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
- The College of Pharmacy was recently ranked #6 in the nation (Gourman Report). The College of Pharmacy opened a new addition in 1996.
- In addition to academic divisions of Pharmaceutics, Medicinal and Natural Products Chemistry and Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy, the College contains three service divisions including a FDA registered manufacturing facility, the Iowa Drug Information Service and the Center of Advanced Drug Design.
- The entry-level Pharm.D. Degree program emphasizes primary care and the role of the pharmacist in its delivery during its 45-weeks of experiential education.
- Students are required to take a pharmaceutical care clerkship, a family practice clerkship, a general medicine clerkship, a general community clerkship, and an acute care clerkship, as well as being able to choose elective clerkships in specialty areas such as oncology, organ transplantation, psychiatry and others.
- Clerkship sites include University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the Veterans Administration Medical Center located in Iowa City.
- In addition, there are family practice sites located at the family practice residency training sites run by the College of Medicine in several cities plus other hospitals and community pharmacies in Iowa which serve as clerkship and externship sites for our students.
- The comprehensive nature of the pharmacy curriculum prepares the graduate to practice in a variety of settings. These include community and hospital practice, managed care organizations, pharmaceutical industry and opportunities with federal organizations such as the Veterans Administration, Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Public Health Service. Students also may choose to pursue graduate study in the academic divisions listed earlier.
- Dormitory housing is available for freshmen and sophomores and there is a large number of married student housing units available. Rooms and apartments are available throughout Iowa City. Fraternity and sorority houses provide yet another housing option. Information on university housing can be obtained from the University Housing office in Burge Hall.
