DESCRIPTION

Mission Statement: The University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy is dedicated to education that leads to highly qualified pharmacy practitioners, pharmaceutical scientists, and educators who meet the needs of a diverse society.

CURRICULUM

The curriculum provides an educational program which prepares graduates to enter any of the many fields of pharmacy practice.
  • The Pharm.D. curriculum combines two years of prepharmacy education with four years of professional education.
  • Following the completion of the prepharmacy curriculum and acceptance into the professional program, students enroll in sequential and integrated courses such as pharmacology, pharmaceutics, pharmacy administration, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacotherapy.
  • Formal didactic instruction includes integrated courses and each student completes a professional experience program involving two preliminary and nine advanced rotations.
  • Experiential training sites include large research hospital settings, rural health care settings, chronic care settings, community and chain pharmacies, management, marketing and research industrial settings. Specialty settings include pediatric pharmacy, radiopharmacy, drug and poison information center and a burn institute.

Students will be considered for admission to the upper division program during the second year of prepharmacy coursework.
  • The prepharmacy educational requirements are:
  • 100 quarter hours (67 semester hours) with a minimum grade of "C" in each course submitted for transfer;
  • and completion of the prepharmacy curriculum.
The prepharmacy academic requirements involve a full year of study in each of the following courses (with the exception of statistics and bacteriology):
  1. English,
  2. chemistry w/lab,
  3. biology w/lab,
  4. calculus,
  5. organic chemistry w/lab,
  6. physics w/lab,
  7. statistics (3 quarter hours),
  8. and bacteriology or microbiology (3 quarter hours).
Students admitted to the University usually complete the prepharmacy courses in the College of Arts and Sciences. An applicant for upper division study must have demonstrated scholastic ability and aptitude which would indicate the ability to perform in a professional degree program. Through the Admissions Committee, the College of Pharmacy selects annually a class of 66 students. Students are evaluated by the committee on such factors as college performance, academic records, adequacy of prerequisites, educational objectives, demonstrated leadership ability, outside interests and activities, and communication skills. UC gives consideration to students who have taken college- level courses in high school under the Advanced Placement Program of the College Entrance Examination Board. Such records should be forwarded to the Director of Admissions, University of Cincinnati, M.L. #91, Cincinnati, Ohio 45221-0091.
