DESCRIPTION
- The mission of the Southern School of Pharmacy is to prepare its graduates to deliver pharmaceutical care and thereby assure the safe distribution and effective use of pharmaceuticals for the benefit of the patient and society. The School endeavors to provide an environment in which students can actively participate to gain knowledge of pharmaceuticals and their actions, to understand contemporary pharmacy practice, and to develop problem-solving skills.
- The Southern School of Pharmacy is located on Mercer University's Cecil B. Day Campus, situated on 225 acres in a suburban and residential area 15 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. Facilities for the School feature a two-story building completed in November 1991 which includes two 140-seat classrooms, a 50-seat seminar room, and the pharmaceutics and dispensing laboratory. The second floor houses an impressive drug research facility. The Science Building and Student Center accommodate administrative and faculty offices for the pharmacy school. The Clinical Analysis Laboratory, Center for Clinical Research, and additional research laboratories also occupy the Science Building. The library/media center and gymnasium complex supply additional services to the campus.
- The School utilizes 30 metropolitan hospitals, over 100 retail and independent pharmacies and 15 nursing homes to provide practical training for students. Our Atlanta location presents the advantage of exposure to diverse roles for pharmacists.
- The Southern College of Pharmacy was founded in 1903 as an independent college. In 1938 the School was transferred from private ownership to a Board of Trustees and operated on this basis until the merger with Mercer (a private, Baptistaffiliated university) in 1959. In 1981, the Southern School of Pharmacy became the first pharmacy school in the southeast and fifth in the nation to offer the doctor of pharmacy as its sole professional degree. Graduate programs include a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Residency programs are available in five clinical specialty areas.
- The School encourages students to develop an interest in professional activities which complement academic pursuits. Student government, service-oriented fraternities, and student chapters of national pharmacy associations are a few of the challenging choices.
- Excellent student services are offered, including personal counseling, career guidance and job placement. Students find Atlanta to be an exciting environment with entertainment and cultural activities, theater and arts, dining and shopping, recreational parks and employment availability.
- On-campus apartments are available; dormitories are not available. Additional housing assistance is provided. Numerous apartment complexes are also located in the vicinity of the School's campus.
CURRICULUM
The Pharm.D. degree is the sole professional degree offered by the Southern School of Pharmacy. Mercer also has a combined Pharm.D./M.B.A. program and a combined Pharm.D./Ph.D. program. The school offers two special curricular opportunities during the fourth professional year: the International Pharmacy and the Indian Health Service Advanced Practice Experiences.

In May 2003, the Southern School of Pharmacy began utilizing the PharmCAS online application system, available via www.pharmcas.org. - The minimum GPA for consideration is 2.50; grades for all undergraduate coursework attempted are included in this calculation.
- The competitive GPA in order to qualify for a required personal interview with the Admissions Committee will be determined by the overall strength of the applicant pool. An application deadline will be set during the academic year; the application deadline for the class entering in August was February 1.
- All applicants are required to take the PCAT.
- Due to the large number of applicants and limited number of positions available, acceptance is competitive and selective.
- Mercer follows a "rolling admissions" policy. Qualified applicants are accepted to the Pharm.D. program on a continual basis until the class has been filled, after which they are placed on an alternate list. Students are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Classes commence in August of each year.
