DESCRIPTION
The Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (formerly the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy) was founded in 1886 and is the oldest unit of Long Island University.
- During the past century the growth in curriculum, faculty, and facilities illustrate a progress reflective of the College's dedication to meet the changing needs of the health professions and its continued pursuit of excellence.
- Students pursue their studies in both the College's new $22,000,000 Health Sciences Center and the Pharmacy Complex equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and lecture halls.
- A residence hall, library, student service facilities are located on campus.
- The College provides one of the most diverse clinical professional programs in the country with a wide variety of excellent hands-on learning experiences.
- The College offers an entry-level Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree and the master of science degree with specializations in industrial pharmacy, cosmetic science, pharmacology, toxicology, pharmaceutical and health care marketing administration, and drug regulatory affairs.
- The College also offers the doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) program in pharmaceutics. Approximately twenty-five percent of current students continue for advanced degrees.
- The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is a private, nonsectarian institution with a highly diverse student body. There are nearly 1,000 full-time professional students and approximately 150-200 graduate students enrolled each year.
- The College's physical proximity to New York City, with its many social and cultural advantages, creates a cosmopolitan atmosphere on the campus-at-large and pharmacy students enjoy the multiple benefits of a selective professional school set within a large and active university.
- All pharmacy students are eligible to participate in numerous extracurricular programs of intellectual, cultural, athletic and social value.
- The College sponsors active chapters of the Academy of Students of Pharmacy (ASP), the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA), the Rho Chi Pharmaceutical Honor Society, the Phi Lambda Sigma Society, and various professional fraternities and sororities.
- Resident students are housed in a 16-story residence hall. In its various sections are accommodations for men and women, furnished apartments for mature upperclassmen and graduate students and dining, laundry and lounge facilities.
- Social events, films and lectures planned by residence hall staff and committees contribute to a friendly and stimulating atmosphere.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
Admission is selective and is based largely upon an applicant's total academic record.
- Applicants to the first year should have successfully completed at least 16 academic units (including English, mathematics, laboratory sciences and humanities and social sciences) in an accredited two or four-year secondary school.
- To be considered for admission as freshmen to the pharmacy program, high school students need to have an 80 average and a 1000 on the SAT or an 85 average.
- Transfer students need to have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA overall and a 3.0 GPA in the required science courses.
- Students applying for the professional phase of the program need to have:
- two semesters each of general biology,
- inorganic chemistry,
- and organic chemistry;
- one semester each of pre-calculus,
- calculus,
- physics and
- human anatomy.
- In addition, students need 24 credits in the humanities and social sciences including
- 12 credits of English composition and literature,
- 3 credits each of speech, economics, and
- 6 credits of either history or philosophy.
- Students are admitted to the pharmacy program once a year in the fall.
- Grades of "C" or better in subjects that correspond or are of equal value to courses in the preprofessional curriculum are acceptable for transfer.
- The College awards generous academic merit scholarships, not based on need for students in the undergraduate portion of the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program.
- Entering freshman students may be eligible for up to eight semesters of university-funded scholarships in varying amounts based on prior academic performance.
- In addition to scholarships, substantial financial aid packages are available to qualifying pharmacy students through the Office of Student Financial Aid Services.
- The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences participates in both the Advanced Placement Program (APP) and the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) of the College Entrance Examination Board. Placement and/or credit may be granted for academic work in preprofessional subject areas.
