Eligibility Requirements

T he Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal was authorized by the Secretary of Navy on 1650.16 of 1 May 1961. It is awarded in the name of the Secretary of Navy to an individual who, while serving in any capacity in or with the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps below the grade of 0–4 (Lieutenant Commander or Major) and usually below E-7 (Gunnery Sergeant) who, after after 1 May 1961, distinguished themselves by meritorious service or achievement in a combat or non-combat situation based on sustained performance or specific achievement of a superlative nature, and shall be of such merit as to warrant more tangible recognition than is possible by a fitness report or performance evaluation, but which does not warrant a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal or higher.

Staff Sergeant Keith Del Rey

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

F  or professional achievement while serving as a safety non-commissioned officer of Battery "B" , 1st Battalion, 14th Marines, 4th Marine Division in connection with insurgent enemy of Iraq.  On November 23, 2005 element of Battery B were conducting a patrol when the section suddenly were subject to intense mortar and automatic weapons from well concealed enemy insurgent element.  Ignoring his painful wound from initial burst of fire, Staff Sergeant Del Rey held his position to aid and support other wounded Marines.  Disregarding his personal safety, Staff Sergeant remained with his section upon arrival of reactionary force until section was moved to a position of relative safety. Staff Sergeant Del Rey's resolute determination and aggressive fighting spirit in the face of extreme personal safety were an inspiration to all who observed him and contributed to significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission.  Staff Sergeant Del Rey's courage, outstanding professionalism and unwavering devotion to duty reflected great credit upon  himself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the Naval Service.
