Eligibility Requirements

T he Joint Service Commendation Medal (JSCM) was authorized by the Secretary of Defense on 25 June 1963 and implemented by DOD 1348.33–M. It is awarded in the name of the Secretary of Defense to members of the Armed Forces of the United States who, after 1 January 1963 , distinguished themselves by meritorious achievement or service while assigned to a joint activity. . The prescribing directive for the JSCM is DOD 1348.33–M.

V device
A bronze "V" is authorized if the citation is for an act or service involving direct participation in combat operations during the period June 25, 1963 to March 31, 1976. Effective April 1, 1976, the "V" device is authorized if the citation is approved for valor (heroism) in a designated combat area.

Precedence

The Joint Service Commendation Medal shall be placed in precedence after Air Medal and before Navy Commendation Medal.

F  or meritorious service while serving a as a Strategic Planner, Strategy Division, the Joint Staff from 18 January 2006 to 1 April 2006.  Major A. Leon performed her critical demanding duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner.  Major Leon was an integral participating member of stripping and planning the strategic procedure that influence the policy of joint chief of staff.  Major Leon's professionalism and total dedication to duty reflected great credit upon  herself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps , the United States Naval Service and the Department of Defense.
