Pharmacy technology program that is competency based and perspectives needed to succeed within the Pharmacy Technology field.

Purpose Statement

The Pharmacy Technology program is competency-based and will teach the appropriate skills, knowledge, and perspectives needed to succeed within the Pharmacy Technology field. Students will be given the opportunity to attain competence in oral and written communication as well as math and computer skills specific to the workplace.

Overview

This program consists of a sequence of courses designed to prepare students for employment as pharmacy technicians. Successful completers of this certificate program will be eligible to write the licensure examination that is mandated. Students who complete the Pharmacy Technology program are automatically certified in preparation of IV solutions and sterile compounding under Texas Board of Pharmacy Rule 291.71 through 291.76 which specifies: "Pharmacy technicians who compound sterile pharmaceuticals must also complete through a single course, sterile pharmaceuticals training as required by Board Rule 291.36(c)(4)(C): a structured on-the-job 40 hour training program, a 40 hour training program presented by the ACPE approved provider; or a training program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists". The pharmacy technician functions under the direct supervision of the registered pharmacist. This program is competency based and will teach the appropriate skills, knowledge and perspectives needed to succeed within the pharmacy technology field. Students will be given the opportunity to attain competence in oral and written communication as well as math and computer skills specific to the workplace. The Pharmacy Technology Program holds full accreditation status from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

General Admission Requirements - College

To be considered for admission to the Pharmacy Technology Program, the student is responsible for completing the admission procedure for Lamar State College-Orange and the Pharmacy technology admission requirements below:
I. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS - LAMAR STATE COLLEGE-ORANGE
A. Submit to Lamar State College-Orange:

1. Application for admission to Lamar State college-Orange
2. An official high-school transcript or GED Certification
3. Original transcripts of all college work completed at other colleges or universities.
4. A copy of your driver's license.
5. A copy of your social security card.

Special Admission Requirements for Pharmacy Technology Program

Students must meet the following admission requirements to be accepted into the Lamar State College-Orange Pharmacy Technology Program

1. possess a high-school diploma or a GED certificate;
2. be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age;
3. complete the Pharmacy Technology Program Application;
4. complete the Applicant Interview Form and Employment History Form;
5. have one personal letter of recommendation on the form provided; and
6. be recommended by the program director or designee for admissions.
