Admissions

An interested applicant must meet all of the following guidelines. Items that are listed must be on file in order for the application to be considered complete and ready for review.

1. Application for Health Sciences
2. Official high school transcript/diploma or official GED scores or proof of college level courses College transcripts(s).
3. Foreign transcripts (high school &/or college) must be evaluated by an approved HCCS evaluation service.
4. Take the appropriate placement test given at HCCS or provide proof of passing TASP.
5. Attend a Pharmacy Technician Program information session. Call 713-718-7414 for information dates and times.
6. Completion of HPRS 1201 "Introduction to Health Professions" is required.
7. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and successfully pass the ASSET exam.
8. Personal oral and written interviews are also required.
9. An applicant is selected on a point-based system, which includes test scores and the interview (oral and written). Following the interview and evaluation process, the applicant is notified of the results.
10. A class is made up of 35-40 students who successfully complete the application process.

Academic Program

Pharmacy Technology Certificate

• In order to obtain employment in a Texas pharmacy, technicians must take and successfully pass the national exam to become a certified pharmacy technician (CPhT).
• In addition to PTCB certification, all persons wishing to participate in pharmacy technician clinical internships must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP).
• Furthermore, all persons wishing to obtain employment in Texas as a pharmacy technician must also be registered with TSBP as a Pharmacy Technician. At the time of application as a pharmacy technician trainee, TSBP performs a criminal history check. At the time of application as a pharmacy technician, TSBP performs a criminal history check and verifies certification with PTCB. The TSBP website states that "according to the Texas Pharmacy Act, a conviction for a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or a felony is grounds for the Board to refuse to issue a Pharmacy Technician registration. Additionally, a violation of the Texas Controlled Substances Act or Dangerous Drug Act is also grounds for refusal. A criminal history is not an absolute bar to receiving a registration, but each case will be evaluated individually based on the nature and seriousness of the crime, length of time since the conviction, past criminal history and rehabilitation of the applicant, and other relevant facts. • A full-time student in the 6-month Pharmacy Technician Program attends lectures in classrooms and applies skills in lab settings at the Coleman College of Health Sciences during the first semester. In the second semester, the student gains hands-on clinical experience in various pharmacy settings throughout the city.
