The following procedure should workon most sony vaio systems

My Memory Stick Encounter in 2002: When I first saw GRX-550 laptop, I was impressed. It was a stylish and fairly powerful laptop. Inoticed that it had Windows XP installed systemically but I neededwindows 2000 Professional for work because server at work onlysupports windows 2000. I asked the salesman regarding windows 2000 installation. Although he had a limited knowledge about OS he alleviate to my concern for me to purchase the computer. I bought thecomputer believing that fact that I am versatile with computersand I could tweak that laptop to install Windows 2000Professional O.S.. I installed Windows 2000 Professional.System was fine except Memory Stick Slot Device Error Naturally, I called SONY support for help but they were no help. But likemost of us computer enthusiast, I was determined to resolve thisproblem.
I searched for the driver. I went on rampage of downloading all possible drivers that may resolve my issue. I don't recall where the driver was obtained (I think they blocked that site now), but it works.� It could have been microsoft windows update or sony.com. While on my quest of working driver, I stopped by microsoft windows update for microsoft.com to analyze my devices and driver issue. Microsoft Windows update did not show memory stick driver as troubled driver (Hmmmmm....).
I was relieved� that I actually resolved this issue. I do realize that many of you are seeking same resolution to your memory stick driver issue.
I do not give support for memory stick driver issue (I have in the past, but it dawned on me that I am not actually getting pay for this, I do have a job...). In fact, I do not own the laptop anymore (since 01/01/2004). I do have sony laptop T340P by sony.
02/11/05:I also have sony desktop with windows xp O.S.. I just installed windows 2000 and successfully install memory stick issue by utilizing the driver package in application recovery cd. If anybody needs that particular driver, check your application recovery cd.
03/11/08: Sonylap T340P memory stick was running fine until I sent to sony repair to fix keyboard issue. It does not recognize any memory stick. Again, memory stick issue. Each time after inserting memory stick I would have to populate drive in device manager than memory stick works fine. A little annoying but I don't use memory stick drive often.

THIS MEMORY STICK IS AN EXCELLENT INVENTION.I BACKED UP MY FRIEND'S OLD SYSTEM THAT DID NOT HAVE A USB OR PARALLEL PORT. I BOUGHT A FLOPPY ADAPTER AND 128MB MEMORYSTICK. I WAS ABLE TO BACK UP THE SYSTEM WITH ONE MEMORY STICKALTHOUGH IT TOOK ABOUT AN HOUR.

PROCEDURE TO INSTALL DEVICE DRIVERS WITH WINDOWS 2000

(This method applies only for the laptop I mention above and always check with your manufacturer). If you are not installing windows 2000 O.S., just download the driver (AFTER CLEANINSTALLING WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL) Prior to performing following procedure go to windows update at microsoft.com and browse through windows update you should see sony memory stickdriver update.(If you do not see sony memory stick driverupdate then...)

Follow below procedure step by step then you should have no problem.
Nuke the system. (I used partition magic, the startup disk).
TAKE A CHILL PILL (OBTAIN ALL NECESSARY DRIVERS). I OBTAINED THE DRIVERS FROM THE ORIGINAL APPLICATION CDs.
INSTALL VIDEO DRIVER.I.E. ATI RADEON 7500.
INSTALL AUDIO DRIVER. I.E. YAMAHA....
INSTALL NETWORK DRIVER. I.E. INTEL PRO/100 VE NETWORKCONNECTION
INSTALL PCI DEVICE. I.E. CONEXANT-AMBIT SOFTK56.
INSTALL INTEL CHIPSET INSTALLATION SOFTWARE UTILITY (THISSHOULD CAME WITH THE ORIGINAL RECOVERY CD, IF YOU DO NOT HAVEBROWSE SONYSTYLE.COM OR GO TO INTEL.COM).
INSTALL NOTEBOOK CONTROL DEVICE (ORIGINAL CD RECOVERY ORSONYSTYLE.COM).
INSTALL SONY PROGRAMMABLE I/O CONTROL DEVICE (ORIGINAL CDRECOVERY OR SONYSTYLE.COM).
INSTALL USB MEMORY STICK SLOT. I.E. MSC-U03 USB DEVICE.(GO TO USPHARMD.COM DOWNLOAD PAGE, THE FIRST DRIVER LISTED WITH 84KB).

*IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEM INSTALLING WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL

THIS PROCEDURE WORKED FOR MY SONY VAIO PCG-GRX550 SYSTEMFOR INSTALLATION OF WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL, IF YOU ANY PROBLEM/ISSUE CALL SONY SUPPORT (24/7).

THEORETICALLY, THIS SHOULD WORK FOR ANY SONY COMPUTER,BUT YOU MAY ENCOUNTER DIFFICULTY. ALSO, THE DOWNLOADABLE MEMORY STICK DRIVER IS DESIGNED FOR ALL COMPUTER WITH WIN 2K OR WINNT O.S.

Download the driver, then re-install the driver via devicemanager.
