How to set up and use mobile phone modem for internet connection - includes usb and bluetooth modems

Introduction

Most mobile phone companies offer phones with modem capability. Since February 2006, I have been using PPC6700 phone modem for all my internet connection. Originally, I was paying $50 a month for the wireless card connection but modem phone service was free (at the time). I considered myself as a technologically savy person and I like to keep up with new advances in technology. I also like the idea that I could take my laptop and my cell phone I could get mobile connection.

• PPC6700 do have internet browser but limited, slow, and poor visibility especially if you were trying to use map. The displayed maps on cell phone were not useful at all. Additionally there were numerous sites that does not support mobile browsers.
• For about first 6 months sprint did not charge for the internet connection nor did they offer any support. But sprint finally came to senses and start charging via per kb downloads or $15 flat fee a month for sprint pcs vision.^*$15 monthly fee for mobile internet connection is reasonable and very mobile. Sprint support was not relative to their fees. Sprint probably prefer sprint connection card patrons. My observation is that sprint employees would not assist customers inquiring about phone modem issue.
• The usb modem drivers are downloadable on sprint. Active Sync and modem softwares are useful. It is a nifty way to connect to internet.

USB Modem Connection

In order to use mobile modem for internet connection, obtain mobile phone specific driver for particular operating system. Most of these drivers are downloaded from mobile phone companies web site. Once proper program or driver is installed, check your mobile phone for active sync program status to turn off active sync program. Once a phone is connected to the computer via usb, computer could either recognize a active sync mobile phone or usb modem connection. Those two functions cannot be perform with one connection. I perform this check every time before I connect to the computer as modem. Once active sync is turned off, turn on wmodem set up on the phohne and select usb modem and start. Then attach mobile phone as a modem to the computer. Open network connection control panel and a connection for phone modem should appear. If this is not an option, then the driver for the modem is not properly installed.

• If you do not see the CDMA or mobile phone modem as an option for connection, the connection must be added on internet options. Internet option is feature on tools of internet browser or control panel.
• Under connections tab, add connection for dial connection with the phone number #777. The computer should be flagged for proper driver issue. Browse the computer to the driver files (either on the CD or location of file, if downloaded).
• If connection issue persist changing to active sync mode, connect the phone as active sync mode, then disable the active sync network on network connections.
• Reset or enable the connection, if active sync mode is require for synchornization
• If issue cannot be resolved, I personally just use bluetooth modem connection.

In order to use mobile modem for internet connection via bluetooth, turn bluetooth on and discoverable for both computer and the phone. Again, make sure active sync on the phone is off. It is best to set the password in order to prevent intrusion. Once two discover each other, start wmodem program on the phone and start modem with bluetooth. Go to network connections on the computer then start bluetooth connection. Phone number to dial for both bluetooth and usb modem is #777.

• Bluetooth modem connection do not require any driver or special software as long as both your phone and computer have bluetooth capability.
• The usual connection speed is 115kbps, half the speed of usb modem connection but it is my preference of connection because it no active sync issue

Sprint Wireless Service Bill

^*Sprint did not charge any service fee for using a modem and I utilized the modem service freely without signing up any other service fees besides regular phone service. However, one month I got billed for $4000 followed by $4500 next month. I called and spoked with almost every department of sprint company and they just told me that was my bill for mostly due to kb download charge. Sprint would not release the data information for the charge but I had to pay. I didn't have any solution to resolved this issue except there was a sprint pcs customer service call that left voice message about 1 month ago and I decided to call the service. The person I called was president's executive secretary and she knew about the my issue and she erased about $8000 off my bill. She had some juice because that is a lot of money. She stated that I needed to sign up a service for data download for $15 and I gladly obliged to that. I was very happy and relieved. I am a loyal sprint customer.
