DESCRIPTION

The School of Pharmacy of the University of Puerto Rico, founded in 1913 at the Rio Piedras campus of the University of Puerto Rico, is the oldest institution dedicated to the education of a health related profession within the educational system of Puerto Rico. In 1977, the Council on Higher Education approved its transfer to the Medical Sciences Campus. Its primary mission is to prepare professionals to enter the practice of pharmacy, who will integrate the health team and assume the responsibility of providing pharmaceutical care. The teaching personnel consists of a total of 38 members: 31 doctorates, 1 with J.D., 6 with master degrees and two with baccalaurate degrees. In addition approximately 225 registered pharmacists serve as preceptors. The physical facilities of the School of Pharmacy are located in the Pharmacy and Students Deanships Building, the Main Building, the Center for Energy and Environmental Research Building, and the Library of the Medical Sciences campus. The School also maintains the Medicinal and Poisonous Plant Garden, located at the Experimental Station of the University of Puerto Rico and the Dr. Luis Torres Diaz Museum, located on the first floor of the Pharmacy and Students Deanships Building. The experiential component of the professional program uses as training sites 25 institutions, 45 community pharmacies, the School’s Drug Information Center, 13 pharmaceutical industry manufacturing plants, and more than 20 other sites. To support the students’ physical, moral, social, emotional and professional development, the School and Deanship of Students of the campus provide a wide array of services, activities and informal learning experiences outside the classroom. The School environment with its diversity of activities and resources presents significant opportunities for students to try new identities, test their values and increase their judgment and maturity. The School of Pharmacy does not offer housing facilities; nevertheless, the residence of the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus offers accommodations to students. Private boarding houses are available in the neighborhood nearby. For more information on housing facilities, contact the Orientation Office of the Deanship of Students at the Medical Sciences Campus.
