DESCRIPTION

The School of Pharmacy, founded in 1908 at The University of Mississippi, is recognized as one of the premier schools of pharmacy in the U.S. The mission of The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy is to improve the health of our citizens and the world: by educating pharmacy practitioners, scientists and other health professionals in a variety of programs including the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Doctor of Pharmacy, Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy and post-doctoral residencies and fellowships; by generating and disseminating new biomedical knowledge through collaborative and multidisciplinary research and scholarly activity; by encouraging the advancement of pharmaceutical care by providing pharmacy practitioners with professional development opportunities and by conducting practice-based research; and by providing service to pharmacists, other health professions and scientific disciplines, and citizens of Mississippi and the world. The School is the site of the Thad Cochran National Center for Natural Product Research. In addition to a student health center pharmacy, the school is the first school of pharmacy to operate an ambulatory pharmaceutical care clinic affiliated with outpatient clinics of a university medical center. The School of Pharmacy is located on both the Oxford campus and Medical Center (Jackson) campus of the University of Mississippi. Oxford, a small town of about 15,000, is located 75 miles south of Memphis. The School of Pharmacy has about 425 professional students and about 60 graduate students in the disciplines of Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology, and Pharmacy Administration.

CURRICULUM

The School offers a six-year doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. This degree program is divided into three two-year segments with the initial two years of prepharmacy courses, followed by two years of professional coursework leading to the B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences. This degree is a non practice, non-professional degree. Students who are interested in practicing pharmacy must apply for admission into the final two-year segment at the end of their fourth year. Only those students completing the entire six-year program will receive the Pharm.D. degree. The fourth year encompasses six different curricular pathways leading to areas of specialization within the B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences degree. In addition to the core curriculum which is prerequisite for entering the final two years of the Pharm.D. program (practice pathway), there are curricular paths in other pharmacy related areas. These include medicinal chemistry, natural products drug discovery and development, pharmaceutics, pharmacology, and pharmaceutical marketing and management. Therefore, all students who graduate with the Pharm.D. degree will have received the B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Whereas, not all students who receive the B.S. degree will necessarily continue through the Pharm.D. program. In addition to the coursework taken on the Oxford campus, students spend their fifth year in didactic coursework at The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. This entire year is structured as a student-centered problembased learning experience. The sixth year consist of seven 6- week (4 required, 3 elective) clerkships and externships located at The University of Mississippi Medical Center and other designated community and institutional practice sites.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

The majority of students who pursue the B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences degree will initially complete a two-year prepharmacy program at this or another accredited two-year or four-year institution. However, a number (approximately 50) of academically exceptional high school graduates are initially enrolled as freshman in the School of Pharmacy. Eligibility for participation in this Early Entry Program includes an exceptional high school GPA and a minimum composite ACT (or SAT equivalent) score of 25. Final acceptance is based on an interview, essay and review of extracurricular activities. Applicants, including transfer students, must meet the following requirements and guidelines: (a) submit a PCAT score of at least 40 composite percentile; (b) complete the prepharmacy program which consists of 6 hours each of English composition and social science, 8 hours of biological sciences, 16 hours of chemistry, 4-8 hours of physics, 9 hours of humanities and fine arts, speech, microeconomics and calculus; (c) earn a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on these required prepharmacy courses; and (d) submit an application prior to February 1 of the year for which enrollment is desired. Admission will be based on a PCAT score (highest composite score obtained) taken within 12 months of the application deadline cumulative required prepharmacy GPA, record of service, leadership, and employment experience; performance on a standardized critical thinking skills appraisal instrument, and on the attainment of a bachelors or higher academic degree. Preference will be given to in-state residents and those out-of-state students who complete all of their required prepharmacy coursework at the University of Mississippi. Applications from exceptional out-of-state students who complete their prepharmacy requirements at schools other than the University of Mississippi will be considered. Students who obtain a minimum 2.75 GPA on practice track courses in both the third and fourth years of the B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences curriculum (and who receive final grades of C or better in all of these courses) will be accepted into the Doctor of Pharmacy program.
