DESCRIPTION
The University of Toledo was founded in 1872 as a municipally supported institution and became part of the State University System in 1967.- The College of Pharmacy, founded in 1904, is the oldest college on the University campus. The College's current home, a state of the art facility opened in 1997 known as Wolfe Hall, includes classrooms, research laboratories, instructional laboratories including a 6400 square foot professional development laboratory, an animal facility, a greenhouse/plant science facility, and faculty offices.
- The University has affiliations with over 200 pharmacies, hospitals and clinics throughout Ohio that provide experiential training to complement the instruction on campus.
- Pharmacy students have access to computer laboratories within the building as well as campus-wide and dormitory access to the University's computer system. That system was the basis for Yahoo Magazine ranking The University of Toledo as one of the top 100 wired campuses in the entire United States.
- The academic curriculum is complemented by student life opportunities that encompass more than 200 campus organizations (including nine in the College).
- Campus wide and funded organizations include the Student Body Government, the Black Student Union, the Graduate Student Association , the Student Union Board, the Collegian student newspaper, and radio station WXUT.
- Application for on-campus housing should be filed as early as possible in the year the student anticipates entering the University.
CURRICULUM
The professional program in pharmacy is a six year, 227 semester hour curriculum culminating in the Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
- The plan of study includes a two year pre-pharmacy curriculum, primarily focused on the science and mathematical foundation necessary to understand how the body works and responds to disease and its treatment.
- A core of humanities, social science and multicultural studies are also part of the early curricular plan so that the emerging graduate has an enlightened view of his/her role in society.
- The professional program of study focuses on biochemistry, microbiology, immunology and the design of chemicals that comprise today's medicines.
- This instruction is complemented with the applied sciences of pharmacology and pharmaceutics that provide insight to the student on how drugs work in the body and the most effective way to deliver drugs into the body.
- The final years of classroom study heavily emphasize the administrative and clinical sciences that prepare the student for structuring and providing effective patient care in a variety of practice settings. Proficiency in physical assessment, drug informatics, communications, writing and presentation skills are also emphasized.
- The professional program also includes three opportunities for hands-on training in actual practice settings.
- The program of study is capped off with an eight month experiential component that offers the student-pharmacist faculty-precepted training in a variety of practice settings.
- Completion of the program qualifies the student to sit for the pharmacist licensure examination. The College of Pharmacy also offers a four-year B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences (B.S.P.S) degree, that prepares students for positions in pharmacy management, the pharmaceutical industry, forensic and research laboratories, and for graduate study.
- Current majors in the B.S.P.S. program include pharmacology/toxicology, medicinal and biological chemistry, pharmaceutics, and pharmacy administration. A practicum is required in all majors.
