DESCRIPTION
The School of Pharmacy is dedicated to maximizing human health and well-being by preparing pharmacists to be lifelong learners, by providing pharmaceutical care, by developing innovative practice models, and by advancing science through cutting-edge research.- Originally organized in 1878, the School of Pharmacy is located in Oakland, the cultural center of Pittsburgh. It is a part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, one of the nation's foremost academic medical centers, which includes the schools of pharmacy, medicine, dental medicine, nursing, public health and health and rehabilitation sciences.
- Collectively, these facilities provide one of the nation's greatest, most complete health centers for teaching, patient care and research in the health sciences. School of Pharmacy students train at more than 20 clinical sites and hospitals managed or affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
- In addition, the School utilizes more than 200 other sites in the region for its experiential learning program.
- Instruction for the professional and graduate courses in the School of Pharmacy is given mainly in Salk Hall, site of the discovery of the Salk polio vaccine. The School's Drug Information Center is located in the Victoria Building.
- There are numerous social, cultural and educational events on the University of Pittsburgh campus and throughout the city.
- These include intercollegiate and professional sports, concerts, museums and international cultural activities. The School of Pharmacy has several professional fraternities and an active Academy of Students of Pharmacy chapter.
- The University's Division of Student Affairs provides a variety of support service for students including personal counseling and study skills workshops.
- The Placement Services provides professional resume writing and interview workshops and assists in summer internship placement and career preparation. The University of Pittsburgh Housing Office and Office of Residence Life share the responsibility of providing an enriching and full living experience for approximately 5,000 resident students.
- The Housing Office is responsible for all housing facilities, room assignments, meal plans and all other operating functions of the six residential complexes. The Office of Residence Life provides a capable and supportive staff to promote living/learning communities within a pleasant and satisfying environment. The Commuter Resource Center continually provides a list of private apartments and rooms for rent throughout the year.
CURRICULUM
The curriculum is configured in a program of study that requires successful completion of two years of preprofessional courses prior to entry into the professional curriculum.- The professional curriculum is four years in length and leads to the doctor of pharmacy degree (Pharm.D.). Preprofessional requirements may be completed at the University of Pittsburgh or any accredited college or university.
- The curriculum has been designed to integrate classroom with practice experience. Scientific concepts taught in introductory courses are reinforced later and the complexity of the curriculum builds over four years.
- Students are expected to be able to use their knowledge and skills to solve drug-related problems in practice and case simulations. A variety of teaching and assessment strategies are employed.
- Verbal presentations and written assignments are utilized throughout the curriculum to emphasize the importance of educating patients and health care practitioners about drug-related problems. Graduates of the program are expected to be selfdirected learners capable of providing pharmaceutical care to their patients.

- academic performance in the prepharmacy courses;
- review of three letters of reference;
- performance on the PCAT (Pharmacy College Admissions Test) and;
- a personal statement provided by the applicant.
- Qualified entering freshmen at a University of Pittsburgh campus may be offered conditional acceptance.
- Conditional status is offered to high school students who rank in the upper 10% of their graduating class, score 1250 or higher on the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) with a minimum of 650 in the Math section and specify "pharmacy" on their application.
- Conditional status students are expected to perform well in their preprofessional courses. In order to secure a place in the class, they must earn an overall GPA of 3.25 or greater and a 3.0 or greater QPA in the required math and science courses without repeating any courses or earning any grade below a C.
- All students applying to the professional program for admission to the School of Pharmacy must complete an application on PharmCAS www.pharmcas.org and submit a downloadable School of Pharmacy Supplemental Application available at www.pharmacy.pitt.edu. The Admissions Committee will review applications for evidence of sound scholarship, campus and community involvement, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, and aptitude for professional life.
- The University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy does not admit students to advanced standing regardless of completion of prior courses or prior degree requirements. Foreign credits are not acceptable.
