DESCRIPTION
Pharmacy is the oldest professional program at the University of Oklahoma and the first two graduates received the pharmaceutical chemist diploma in 1896.- In 1976 the College of Pharmacy moved from the Norman campus to the Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City.
- The Oklahoma City campus is located a few minutes from downtown and 20 miles from the Norman campus.
- The Center includes major hospitals, clinics, and research facilities as well as the Colleges of Allied Health, Dentistry, Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine and Graduate College.
- The Henry D. and Ida Mosier Pharmacy Building, a 75,000 square-foot facility, is well designed and equipped for contemporary pharmacy education, graduate education and research in the pharmaceutical sciences, and continuing professional education.
- Students in both Oklahoma City and Tulsa complete the same curriculum using a number of educational technologies and distance education methods.
- The Schusterman Center offers over 20,000 square-feet of space within one wing of the center and provides educational opportunities to medical, nursing, allied health and a number of other disciplines.
- The College encourages active involvement in student professional organizations such as the Academy of Students of Pharmacy, Student National Pharmaceutical Association, Oklahoma Pharmacists Association and Oklahoma Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists, National Community Pharmacists Association, and American Society of Consultant Pharmacists.
- Chapters of two professional fraternities- Kappa Psi and Phi Delta Chi-as well as two pharmacy honor societies (Rho Chi and Phi Lambda Sigma) are active within the College.
- Newly constructed on-campus housing on the Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City opened to students in Fall 2003. Currently, no on-campus housing is available in Tulsa.
- Commuting times are generally less than 30 minutes and excellent parking is available on both campuses.
- The Oklahoma City and Tulsa areas provide excellent opportunities for employment as a pharmacy intern in most areas of practice along with a comprehensive array of recreational facilities.
CURRICULUM
The College offers the doctor of pharmacy professional degree program as the sole entry-level degree. The Pharm.D. program requires the equivalent of two years of pre-pharmacy study, which may be completed at any accredited university and four years of professional study at the College of Pharmacy.- The curriculum requires entering students to possess basic computer skills and an attitude motivated toward life-long learning.
- Students are expected to develop a foundation in basic sciences and introductory professional topics through courses offered during the first year of the professional program.
- Beginning in the second and continuing through the third professional year, the curriculum features a series of ten organ system and disease-based courses integrating basic and clinical sciences.
- Students are also required to complete courses in clinical toxicology, professional communications, drug information systems, and drug literature evaluation, among others. Students are exposed to pharmacy practice through early practicum experiences throughout the first and second year of the professional curriculum.
- The entire fourth of the professional curriculum is devoted to experiential learning. Students are required to complete nine practicum rotations in community and hospital practice, ambulatory care, adult medicine, and other elective opportunities.
