DESCRIPTION

The University of New England (UNE) is an independent, coeducational university with two distinctive campuses in two Maine coastal cities. The University Campus is located in Biddeford, Maine, where the Saco River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The Westbrook College Campus in Portland is designated a national historic district and is quintessential New England. The University of New England was found as St. Francis College (catholic mens college) in 1953 that merge with with Westbrook College in Portland in 1996. UNE offers College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Health Professions and comprehensive undergraduate liberal arts education, in College of Arts and Sciences, including but not limited to environmental science, marine science, English, history, business, communication and education. UNE’s student-centered, interdisciplinary programs promote experiential learning, critical thinking, and lifelong service to community. The mission of the College will be to provide a suitable environment for the teaching-learning process to effectively deliver a contemporary pharmacy curriculum designed to graduate competent practitioners.

CURRICULUM

The College will offer the Doctor of Pharmacy as the entry-level professional degree that will prepare students for careers as

pharmacists and/or pharmaceutical scientists. The Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree is awarded after successful completion of

four years of professional study. A minimum of two years of undergraduate pre-professional education is required for admission,

followed by four years of professional studies. The two-year, undergraduate pre-professional program (Pre-Pharmacy) starts in the fall of 2007 on UNE’s University Campus in Biddeford, Maine. The four-year, professional program (Pharm.D.) is designated to begin September 2009 on UNE’s Westbrook College Campus in Portland, Maine. The introductory pharmacy practice experiences in community and institutional pharmacy settings begin early in the professional curriculum and are interfaced with didactic course instruction that provides an introduction to the profession and continue in a progressive manner that prepare students to enter into the advanced pharmacy practice experiences. The advanced pharmacy practice experiences take place in the fourth professional year and involve nine one-month full-time experiences in a variety of pharmacy practice settings that are involved with direct patient care. The required experiences include primary, acute, chronic, and preventive care among patients of all ages and involve collaboration with other health care professionals. Experiential pharmacy education at this level is conducted under direct pharmacist-preceptor supervision and monitoring.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Admission criteria
  1. Maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 for pre-pharmacy coursework with grades of “C” or better, and
  2. Complete the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) no later than January of the year of anticipated enrollment.
  3. Interpretation of an individual’s PCAT Score will be on the basis of national results for the particular exam date, and
  4. Successfully interview with the College of Pharmacy, and
  5. Submit two letters of recommendation. One will be from a pharmacist and the other from a professor familiar with the students work,
  6. Demonstrate participation in community/campus activities,
  7. Successfully complete a criminal background check, and
  8. Complete the online application for admission into the College of Pharmacy
  9. Complete the 71 credit hours of pre-professional requirements in the Pre-Pharmacy program.
