DESCRIPTION

The College of Pharmacy is located on the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) campus occupying facilities completed in 1976 and has offered the doctor of pharmacy as the only entry-level professional degree since that time.

CURRICULUM

During the first three years of the four-year professional curriculum, students receive instruction in the basic biomedical, pharmaceutical, and clinical sciences.
  • The first year of the program offers required courses in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, pharmaceutical care, pharmaceutical sciences, and pharmacy and health care.
  • The second year contains required courses in biology of disease, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutical sciences, and pharmacotherapy.
  • The third year offers courses that are more practiceoriented including law and ethics, pharmacotherapy, drug literature evaluation, and professional practice management.
  • The three-year didactic program also includes 10 general elective hours and 10 professional elective hours.
  • Early practice experiences are also incorporated into the first three years. The fourth year of the program consists of 40 weeks of experiential education. Students will spend 40 to 50 hours per week on 10 four-week rotations at various clerkship sites on campus, in the Omaha metro area and rural communities in Nebraska.
  • The Clerkships are divided into Level I and II. Students are required to complete one Level I clerkship in Acute Care, Ambulatory Care, and Non-direct Patient Care and one Level II clerkship in Acute Care and Ambulatory Care.
  • The remaining five clerkships may be selected by the student. A total of 154 semester hours in the professional program are required for graduation. The complete curriculum may be found on the Web site.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Minimum requirements for admission to the University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy are:
  1. completion of the minimum 60 semester hour prepharmacy curriculum including
    1. general chemistry (8),
    2. organic chemistry (8),
    3. biological sciences (8),
    4. statistics or biostatistics (3),
    5. calculus (3-5),
    6. English composition/speech (6),
    7. accounting (3),
    8. economics (3),
    9. and additional courses in humanities, behavioral or social sciences, and analytical sciences;
  2. an overall minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0/4.0 in university level courses; however GPA's of less than 3.0 are rarely competitive; and
  3. completion of the appropriate UNMC application for admission, personal questionnaire, three reference evaluations, and payment of application fees. Each applicant is evaluated with regard to the following characteristics:
    1. completion of the required prepharmacy courses;
    2. overall academic performance in college-level programs;
    3. academic performance in science courses;
    4. residence in Nebraska or other indication that applicant is likely to practice in the geographic area served by the College;
    5. motivation for the study and practice of pharmacy;
    6. written communication skills and expression of career goals; and
    7. referees' evaluations, interview, and extemporaneous writing.
