DESCRIPTION
Originally organized in 1885, the School was reorganized and reincorporated in 1898 as the Kansas City College of Pharmacy and Natural Science.- It became the third professional school of the University of Kansas City in 1943; and when the University of Kansas City became part of the University of Missouri system in 1963, the School of Pharmacy became the only statesupported pharmacy school in Missouri.
- In addition to the School of Pharmacy, the health science programs at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) include the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing.
- The UMKC School of Pharmacy offers programs leading to the non-licensure Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Science, first professional Pharm.D. degree, the M.S. in pharmaceutical sciences and interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree.
- Although the School of Pharmacy's main facility is on the University's Volker main campus, the facilities also include the Hospital and Clinical Programs Office, the Biopharmacometrics Laboratory, and the Drug Information Center in the health sciences complex on the "Hospital Hill" campus.
- Affiliations are maintained with many area hospitals and clinical pharmacies and contemporary community pharmacy practices. The UMKC School of Pharmacy provides students a variety of student organizations and professional activities in which to participate.
- The professional organizations include active chapters of the student organization of the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA), the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP), the Alpha Omega Chapter of Rho Chi, the Omega Chapter of Kappa Epsilon, and the Gamma Theta Chapter of Kappa Psi. UMKC's ASP chapter has won national recognition for the development and success of PROJECT OUTREACH (drug and alcohol abuse program for fifth graders) and for the active number of participating students in the UMKC Chapter.
- The School's student chapter of APhA has won the Chapter Achievement Award a record number of times. UMKC has approximately 14,000 students enrolled. Approximately 750 students are housed in the University Residence Halls, conveniently located on campus providing comfortable, fully air-conditioned rooms. In addition, UMKC owns and operates two apartment complexes located next to campus. Off-campus housing is coordinated through the UMKC Welcome Center.
CURRICULUM
Students interested in a four-year, baccalaureate program may wish to enroll in the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (B.S.P.S) degree. Although not a practice-level degree leading to pharmacy licensure, the B.S.P.S. curriculum is interdisciplinary in nature. In addition to liberal arts course work, students also complete a majority of credit hours in each of the chemical, biological, and pharmaceutical / pharmacological sciences. Because of a need for well-trained, science and pharmacy knowledgeable individuals, the B.S.P.S. offers a program where students take their skills and put them to work in the biomedical or pharmaceutical industry as technicians in research and analysis. Industry is also looking for people who have the knowledge to pursue pharmaceutical sales and medical liaison positions. Student completing the B.S.P.S. can choose to continue their education in graduate work leading toward the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy.
- The doctor of pharmacy curriculum encompasses five academic years of study for the Pharm.D. degree. The first professional year includes general elective courses in the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as introductory pharmacy and basic science courses. Commencing with the second professional year, students complete upper-level basic science courses and engage in advanced pharmaceutical science lecture and laboratory coursework.
- In the third year, students select professional electives and apply their knowledge to therapeutic problems and are immersed in pharmacology pharmacokinetics and pharmacoeconomics.
- The fourth year includes coursework in advanced therapeutics, evidence based medicine research methods, and physical assessment.
- The final year is devoted to structured experiential learning programs in community or hospital/clinical pharmacy settings. All of the experiential learning courses are conducted in actual practice settings under the supervision of a practitioner-instructor or clinical pharmacist who serves as an exemplary role model in his/her particular type of pharmacy practice.
