DESCRIPTION

The University of Kansas School of Pharmacy accepts the responsibility for: professional, graduate, postgraduate, and professional continuing education of pharmacists; graduate programs in the pharmaceutical sciences; and the maintenance of a leadership role in developing major advanced technologies and enterprises in the drug related areas for the state, nation, and world. The School of Pharmacy was established as part of the University in 1885. Its programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. The School of Pharmacy is housed on the main campus in Lawrence, located 45 miles west of Kansas City on Interstate 70. The midwestern location provides a varied climate, a rich cultural environment, and a great sense of history and tradition that dates back to the early days of the Oregon Trail. The University of Kansas is a comprehensive university and is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities. The University is located on a 1,000-acre campus. It has a student body of 25,000 and offers a full array of services to students such as major college sports events, concerts, theater, recreational facilities, and many social organizations and fraternal living groups. Other opportunities are provided by numerous churches, museums, parks, and civic activities. There are student organizations within the School of Pharmacy which offer social and professional activities.

CURRICULUM

The Doctor of Pharmacy degree requires completion of all the required prepharmacy and professional courses for a total of 200 credit hours with an overall grade point average of 2.25, as well as a 2.25 grade point average in professional courses. The final year of the curriculum consists of nine 4-week clerkship/externship rotations with faculty preceptors at practice sites throughout the state of Kansas. These sites include, but are not limited to: K.U. Medical Center in Kansas City and Wichita, and other sites in Lawrence, Topeka, Kansas City, Salina, Hays, and Garden City. Students must have their own transportation to reach their assigned sites. At the conclusion of the program, students are certified to the Kansas Board of Pharmacy as having completed the entire externship requirement (1,500 hours) and are therefore eligible to take the complete Kansas licensure examination.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

The program leading to the doctor of pharmacy degree requires six years of academic study. The two-year prepharmacy portion may be taken at any accredited two- or four-year college. The prepharmacy requirements of 68 credit hours include a year each of English, general chemistry, and organic chemistry; courses in physics (a grade of B in high school physics is sufficient), calculus, interpersonal communications, biology, microbiology, human anatomy, physiology, and at least nine hours of general studies in the humanities or social sciences. The total general studies requirement is 30 hours. The courses in English, calculus, interpersonal communications, humanities, and social sciences, and other electives comprise these 30 hours. In general, most college-level courses may be counted as part of the general studies requirements for the degree. In addition to the specific exceptions, students should not expect credit for survey-type courses that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries, remedial courses, or multiple courses from one specific area of study. Students will be expected to have or to develop a basic level of competence with personal computers, i.e., word processing and database software. These skills will be necessary for some class assignments as well as future work assignments. The maximum number of hours accepted for advanced standing or transfer is 75 hours. Admission is competitive. To be considered, the student must have a GPA (both overall and in science and math) of not less than 2.5. Admission is determined by the School of Pharmacy Admissions Committee consisting of one faculty member from each department plus two representatives from the office of the dean. Good scholarship is very important, and is considered a predictor for success in the pharmacy curriculum, however, of equal importance are other qualities such as good communications skills, emotional maturity, leadership ability, professional attitude and an interest in service to community. These additional skills may outweigh very high grades or choice of courses taken in the prepharmacy experience. The admission process is highly competitive and is dependent upon the number of applications received and the qualifications of the applicant pool. Application to the School is normally made when a student has completed at least 45 credit hours in the prepharmacy curriculum. Enrollment is limited to approximately 105 first-year professional students. All applications should be submitted no later than March 1 of the second year in the prepharmacy program.
