The University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio is conveniently located off Interstate-75 in northwest Ohio. The mission of the School of Pharmacy is to prepare ethical, entry-level practitionerswho are competent within and sensitive to the ever-changing health care environment as it relates to the collaborative provision ofpharmacy care. Furthermore, the School of Pharmacy endeavors to provide entry-level pharmacy education to traditional studentswithin a diverse, supportive, student centered environment. The curriculum emphasizes lifelong learning, critical thinking, evidence based medicine and service to the community
CURRICULUM
- During the first two years of our six yearpharmacy program, the student will studybasic sciences in depth and pursue a significantlist of general education courses. Thepurpose of the science part of the curriculumis to prepare the foundation for the study ofthe pharmaceutical sciences to come in theupper years. The general education portionwill prepare the student for the human andethical challenges of the profession andprovide a foundation for the student to livea meaningful life.
- The third year is devoted to beginningcourses in pharmacy. These will preparethe student to understand the language ofpharmacy as well as the thought processesinvolved in pharmacy practice. The generalscience material in the third year bridges thebasic science of the first two years and theapplied pharmaceutical science of the fourthand fifth years. Before the student enters thefourth year, 100 hours of shadowing a healthprofessional is required.
- The courses in the fourth and fifth yearsare the core of preparation for professionalpractice in pharmacy. For three semesters, thestudent will learn material from Pharmacy,Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, Therapeutics,Medicinal Chemistry, Kinetics, Herbal/Alternative Therapy and Over-the-CounterTherapies. Professors will cooperate to presentthe material to the student in an integratedway organized around organ systems. Duringthese years, the student will also beginthe process of developing a specialty areain pharmacy by selecting an elective trackfrom subjects like osteoporosis, immunizations,nuclear pharmacy, nutritional support,pharmacotherapy, pharmacy management,and diabetes management. Before the studententers the fifth year, 120 additional hours ofcontact time with a health professional isrequired.
- The six year is the pharmacy practice year.Rotations for the Pharmacy Practice Experienceinclude a required two month rotationeach for Advanced Institutional/GeneralMedicine and Ambulatory/Advanced CommunityPharmacy, one required two monthSpecial Populations rotation (e.g. geriatrics,pediatrics, critical care), and three, one monthrotations chosen from a list of electives
