DESCRIPTION

The University of Connecticut (UConn), the Connecticut College of Pharmacy opened its doors for the first time on October 20, 1925.

  • The mission of the School of Pharmacy is to bring together a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students to advance the quality of health care by providing outstanding professional and graduate education, pioneering research in the pharmaceutical sciences, and committing to excellence in pharmacist-directed patient care.
  • The School of Pharmacy is an upper division school and one of 10 schools and colleges located on the main campus in Storrs, a very beautiful and picturesque area of the state. The School is designated as a regional New England School.
  • Applications are welcomed from non-New England students. The School has offered the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) as its sole professional degree since 1997.
  • The professional program requires completion of two years of pre-pharmacy requirements, two years in the professional program leading to a Bachelor of Science with a major in Pharmacy Studies (BS Pharmacy Studies), followed by two additional years leading to a Pharm.D.
  • This professional Pharm.D. program is a full-time, four-year professional program (132 credits professional program plus 64 credits pre-pharmacy for a total of 196 credits), making the Pharm.D. graduate eligible to stand for licensure.
  • For the last two years of the professional program (Pharm.D. years), there will be additional tuition and required fees for in-state students and proportional increases for New England Regional and out-of-state students.
  • The School of Pharmacy also offers a number of courses leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy. Students holding the degree of Bachelor of Science may prepare for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in pharmaceutics, medicinal and natural products chemistry, pharmacology or toxicology.
  • Resident facilities are available on campus. Students may also add to their classroom experiences by participating in a number of University and pharmacy related clubs and organizations. Many cultural activities are available on campus through the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts, the van der Mehden Music Hall and the William Benton Museum Of Art.
  • Division 1 athletic events also are available on campus. The central location of the University allows students to easily avail themselves of cultural, athletic and social activities in nearby Hartford, New York City and Boston.


CURRICULUM

The professional program requires completion of the two years of pre-Pharmacy requirements, followed by four additional years leading to a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.). Students who are in good scholastic standing will be admitted to the last two years. The professional Pharm.D. program, a full-time, four-year professional program make the Pharm.D. graduate eligible to sit for licensure. The Pharm.D. is the only license eligible degree offered by this School of Pharmacy. The professional program is made up of integrated sequences expanding upon the concepts introduced during the preprofessional years, and applies them to pharmaceutical systems:

  1. bio-organic chemistry and a systems approach to physiology and pharmacology dealing with pharmacology and chemistry of drugs and the function of the normal and diseased body,
  2. drugs and dosage forms, which provide the principles of drug delivery and formulations.

A sequence of applied practice-based courses includes the socioeconomic aspect of the profession and pharmacy administration. Courses in therapeutics and clinical experience provide the basis for selection and therapeutic use of drugs and experience with patients.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

The University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy is an upper division school. The pre-pharmacy curriculum consists of 64 semester hours with courses in science and general education. Applicants must have all science prerequisites completed by the end of the spring semester in which application is made. The 34 credits of science prerequisites include courses in
  • general biology (4 credits),
  • general chemistry (8 credits),
  • organic chemistry (6 credits),
  • biochemistry (4 credits),
  • microbiology (4 credits),
  • calculus (4 credits),
  • and physics (4 credits).

A minimum of 24 of the 30 credits of the following general education and prerequisites courses must be completed before admission in the fall semester:

  1. a course in public speaking,
  2. one course in expository writing,
  3. a course in sociology, psychology, or anthropology
  4. a course in economics, preferably macroeconomics,
  5. the third level in high school foreign language or two semesters in college.

A Test of Spoken English (TSE) is required of all international applicants and U.S. citizens or permanent residents for whom English has not been the primary language. A minimum score of 50 is required for admission. Arrangements to take the TSE are made through The Test of Spoken English, P.O. Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6151, Telephone 609 / 771-7100. Candidates for the professional pharmacy program are selected on a competitive basis and are admitted only in the fall semester of each academic year. College Entrance Examination Board advanced placement, college level examination program tests, or other examinations may be used as a basis for granting advanced standing to students at the time of admission. The department teaching the subject matter will determine the acceptance of the examination results.
