DESCRIPTION

The University of Charleston is a private independent, co-educational, residential university. Founded by the Southern Methodist denomination in 1888 as Barboursville Seminary in Barboursville, West Virginia, it became a college in 1889. In 1901. In 1942 University of Charleston disaffiliated from the denomination and Morris Harvey College and became independent. The University of Charleston’s enrollment is approximately 1,200 students from 30 states and 20 countries. University of Charleston is located in the state capital of West Virginia amidst magnificent mountains and rivers. It has a panoramic view of the capitol building across the Kanawha River. The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy mission is to:

  1. Provide a comprehensive educational program for the education of entry-level practitioners with an emphasis in community pharmacy settings;
  2. Provide community service through leadership in addressing the health care needs of an increasingly diverse patient population;
  3. Constantly add to the knowledge base of the profession of pharmacy.


CURRICULUM

The professional pharmacy curriculum at University of Charleston entails a competency-based framework, using integrated content and teaching, problem-based approaches when appropriate, and experiential exposure threaded throughout. The curriculum emphasizes the management of disease states and the assurance of quality of care through the analysis of medical care outcomes. The curriculum is designed to provide knowledge, teach models of care management, allow students to demonstrate their understanding, and allow plentiful experiential opportunities for practice. Our integrated approach focuses on facilitating the student seeing the relationships within the curriculum to provide an opportunity to address each professional competency as a whole, rather than the “one-course-at-a-time” or “silo” approach. University of Charleston School of Pharmacy admission requirements are

  1. A completed PharmCas application.
  2. A completed supplemental application form.
  3. Grade point average on required pre-pharmacy courses (per information submitted to PharmCas)
  4. Score on the Pharmacy College Admissions Test - PCAT.
  5. A writing sample (this is part of the PCAT examination)
  6. Two (2) letters of recommendation (at least one from a pharmacist).
  7. Demonstration of volunteerism, community service, activism
