DESCRIPTION

Texas Southern University, located in Houston, Texas, is a senior level, comprehensive, historically black, state-supported University. It was established in 1947 by the 50th Texas Legislature and legislatively designated as a statewide general purpose and special purpose institution of higher education for urban programming. The School of Pharmacy established in 1949 was merged with the Department of Health Sciences in 1983 and renamed the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in 1986. Currently, the University has an enrollment of approximately 10,888 students. The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is a member of one of the world's premier sites of multi-institutional health related educational, research and training venues, the Texas Medical Center (TMC). Major hospitals serve as clinical sites for students enrolled in the Doctor of Pharmacy degree programs. The faculty of the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences believes that its primary function is to produce quality health care professionals, especially African-Americans and other ethnic minorities, who are competent in health care delivery including the provision of pharmaceutical care and other health care services and programs. In fulfilling its mission and purpose, the College is committed to an innovative, productive and receptive learning environment for research, scholarly activities and service; and to infusing new technology into its infrastructure and academic programs.

CURRICULUM

The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences offers academic programs that lead to the Pharm.D. degree. The College offers the entry-level Pharm.D. (two-year prepharmacy, four-year professional program) and a two-year post-baccalaureate Pharm.D. The entry-level Pharm.D. program provides diverse pharmaceutical care experiences throughout the curriculum. The students are exposed to various practice settings including institutional, community, home, and other health care facilities. The final year of study (fourth professional year) is devoted solely to clinical and community pharmacy. This year is designated for students to develop their skills, expand their knowledge, and prepare them for new endeavors as clinical pharmacists and pharmacy practitioners. Each sixweek rotation will facilitate interactions with other health care professionals and direct daily interactions with patients during the delivery of pharmaceutical care. The experiential training program has expanded to include rotation sites in other Texas cities as well as out-of-state. The curriculum for the post-baccalaureate Pharm.D. degree is composed of four general areas: didactic course work, professional practice experiences, seminars related to professional practice, and investigational research projects. This program requires a minimum of 67 semester hours (21-24 months) of full time study.
