CURRICULUM

The TAMUK School of Pharmacy offers the doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) as its single professional degree. It is offered in a four-year traditional program. The first year of the curriculum comprises courses that will provide a fundamental understanding of the basic biomedical science concepts that will form the knowledge base required for future decision-making. In the second semester of the second year, courses include Interpretation of Laboratory Data and Therapeutics I, which shift the emphasis toward a more patient- centered, practice-based learning format. In the third professional year, the curriculum is comprised of advanced therapeutics courses, clinical pharmacokinetics, toxicology, and poison management. Courses utilizing case studies are taught in the fall semesters of each of the first three years. The final year concentrates on the clerkship rotations and a grand rounds presentation. The learning formats in these courses are expected to include group effort and consensusbuilding exercises leading to oral presentations and discussions related to contemporary pharmacy practice. Each clinical rotation will facilitate interactions with other health care professionals and direct daily interactions with patients during the delivery of pharmaceutical care.
