DESCRIPTION

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is a statesupported institution which provides education, service and research in the health sciences. MUSC consists of six colleges (pharmacy, nursing, medicine, dentistry, health related professions and graduate studies) as well as a 510-bed medical center and a family medicine center. The on-campus medical center and family medicine center have permitted the College to be a leader in the development of a strong clinical training program allowing direct involvement with physicians, nurses and patients. The institution also maintains multiple off-campus training affiliations. The College of Pharmacy, which has been in continuous service since 1894 offers educational programs leading to the Pharm.D. and Ph.D. degrees. Approximately 42 full-time faculty in two departments participate in the educational programs. The campus, which is located on the peninsula of historic Charleston, is itself rich in heritage. The College of Pharmacy is located on the south end of the campus bounded by Calhoun Street. MUSC does not provide on-campus housing. The Student Life Center does operate a housing office to assist students in relocating to Charleston. Information regarding current availability of off-campus housing can be obtained by contacting the housing office at 803/792-0394.

CURRICULUM

The curriculum leading to the entry-level Pharm.D. consists of two years of prepharmacy coursework followed by four years of professional curriculum in the College. The 67 semester hours of general education and basic science prerequisites are not available at MUSC and must be completed prior to being admitted to the College. Once admitted, the student embarks on a four-year program, the first three of which involve the basic pharmaceutical and health sciences courses necessary for proper orientation to the profession. These courses are offered by the colleges of pharmacy and medicine. Upon successful completion of the first three years, the student enters the fourth and final year consisting of 9 months of clinical clerkships. This year is devoted to firmly establishing the students' knowledge base in the areas of diseases and drug therapy disease state management and pharmaceutical care through a broad range of practical experience in a variety of patient-care settings.
