DESCRIPTION
- Albany College of Pharmacy, one of the nation's premier scientific teaching institutions, is preparing students to excel in this new era of health care - an age where pharmacy and biomedical professionals will be at the heart of medical teams that bring hope, knowledge and continuing health to the people they serve.
- ACP is a private professional college offering a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, with a freshman-entry six-year option and an Accelerated option for transfer students. The Pharm.D. is the sole degree leading to pharmacy licensure.
- ACP also offers a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Technology, a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences and a Certificate Program in Cytotechnology. Additional programmatic growth is planned.
- Founded in 1881, ACP is New York state's oldest pharmacy school and one of the only private, independent pharmacy schools in the United States. Nearly all pharmacy graduates pass national and state licensure exams on the first try, and exciting, rewarding jobs typically await all graduates not continuing their education.
CURRICULUM
- ACP's Doctor of Pharmacy program integrates a liberal arts core with the increasingly complex pharmaceutical sciences.
- The Pharm.D. program is designed for high school graduates or transfer students.
- The first five years include the didactic coursework designed to expand the student's knowledge and skills in pathophysiology of disease and advanced therapeutics.
- The sixth year includes clerkships emphasizing the application and communication of this knowledge to patient care.
- The Accelerated Pharm.D. program is a year-round option for transfer students that offers the opportunity to complete the last four years of the degree in three years. This intensive course of study is available beginning in the Summer semester.
- The B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences provides a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, biochemistry and pharmaceutical sciences. The focus of this program is on the understanding of the process of drug development from the laboratory bench to the pharmaceutical market. Emphasis is on practical skills, including experimental design, instrumentation, data management, scientific communication and problem solving. Students will be highly qualified for entry-level positions in pharmaceutical, chemical and biotechnology industries.
- Graduates from this four-year program also will be well prepared for entrance into graduate programs (M.B.A., M.S., Ph.D.) and business, medical, dental, veterinary and law schools.
- The B.S. in Biomedical Technology is focused on diagnostic clinical laboratory professions. Students currently may pursue a concentration in Cytotechnology, and new for the 2005-06 academic year will be a concentration in Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS).
- The Biomedical Technology program offers a broad-based liberal arts core in the first two years that meets the general ability outcomes of the College and encourages personal intellectual growth. Cytotechnology students enter the professional program at the beginning of the senior year; CLS students will enter the professional program at the beginning of the junior year.
- Both programs require clinical clerkship experiences to bridge classroom training into the workplace and instill a sense of professionalism in the student. Upon graduation, students are eligible to take the national certification examinations in Clinical Laboratory Science or Cytotechnology.
- The College currently is recruiting students into the freshman year of the Biomedical Technology program. In 2005, students will be allowed to transfer into the first professional year (junior year).
- ACP also offers a Certificate Program in Cytotechnology, a one-year training program for post-baccalaureate students and fourth-year students in a baccalaureate degree program at an affiliate institution. Upon completion of the program, students receive a certification and are eligible to take the national certification examination in Cytotechnology through the American Society of Clinical Pathology.
- The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Students who are candidates for the B.S. in Biomedical Technology with the concentration in Cytotechnology complete the fourth year with the certificate students.
