Giving Blood Could Save a Life
None of us want to think about the possibility that we could be involved in a life-threatening accident but the reality is that we are are susceptible to getting hurt or injured every day. While that shouldn’t stop you from doing the things you love and need to do, the reality is that people just like you end up hurt and injured every day. You can help ensure that those who haven’t been as lucky to avoid injury as you have, get the care and help they need when they end up in the hospital by giving blood.
The need for blood in America’s hospitals and medical facilities is constant, and can only be replenished when people are generous enough to donate. People choose to donate their blood for a variety of reasons from needing money to wanting to help a friend or loved one. Whatever your reasons, donations can help save many lives. Yet, despite the life-saving power of donating blood, currently only 3 out of every 100 people in the United States donate blood, making those who do choose to donate part of a select group.
Of course, not everyone out there is can donate blood for physical or personal reasons. For some, donating blood is against their religious beliefs, for others they have a physical impairment or illness that makes donation impossible. Currently, there are a few reasons why donors might be turned away. These can range from pregnancy to having spent an extended amount of time in an area where blood-bourne diseases could be present. Check with your local blood bank to see if you qualify to donate, especially if you have a rare or universal blood type. Blood donors with rare blood types or those who are universal donors can be especially valuable to all kinds of health care facilities, as they can treat patients who are hard to match and can be used with a wider variety of patients.
If you can give blood there more reason than ever to do so. It will only take a few hours out of your day, requires little effort and will only result in a small amount of discomfort. That’s a small price to pay for the honor of knowing that your donation will go towards saving someone’s life when they need medical help most.
