Funding Is Out There for Nursing School

For many, financial concerns are paramount when students consider returning to school or pursuing an undergraduate degree. After all, school isn’t cheap and few have the money to pay tuition out of pocket or to deal with hefty student loans for years to come. While many are well aware that there are scholarships for general education students out there, few know just how many funding opportunities there can be for those who want to pursue a degree in nursing.

In many areas of the country, nurses are in short supply– something that seems like it’s only going to get worse in the coming years before it gets better. In these areas, nursing students may be able to sign deals with local, high-need hospitals. These arrangements will often stipulate that a nurse will spend a set amount of years working in this hospital or health care facility in exchange for funding for all or part of the nurse’s education. While it might sound like a sweet deal, nurses should be sure that they want to stay in that area or are willing to work for that facility for a length of time before committing.

More traditional kinds of scholarships are available as well. Nursing students can find grants and funding through a variety of public and private sources. Many national nursing organizations offer scholarships to nurses they feel stand out, and those who are single mothers or who want to pursue a particular specialty may find even more funding out there. The trick is knowing where to look for it. In that respect, the internet has become an invaluable tool for hunting down scholarships and students will find numerous links with a simple Google search. Of course, asking your school adviser can also be a big help and you may be able to get more personalized help.

Finally, some employers may be willing to pay for the cost of additional education for their employees. See if the medical facility where you work as such a program. It make it a lot easier to keep working while you’re getting your education, helping you on two financial fronts at once.

Finding funding for any kind of schooling isn’t always easy, but with a little hard work and determination, those hoping to head to nursing school can get access to many great scholarships, grants and financial aid programs that can help them live out their career goals, help others and keep their bank accounts in the black at the same time.
